Why Do My LED Lights Buzz, Hum or Glow When Off?
That faint glow or low hum from your LED lights is usually harmless, but not always. Here's how to tell a cheap driver from a real wiring fault, and when to call an electrician.

Short version: most LED buzzing, humming or glowing when off is harmless. Usually it's a non-dimmable bulb sat on a dimmer, a cheap driver, or a trickle of leftover current from an illuminated switch or long two-way wiring. What isn't normal is a warm switch, a burning smell, or a buzz you can hear coming from the wall.
So before you pull every bulb out of the ceiling, let's separate the annoying-but-fine from the genuine fault. I'll tell you which is which, and what actually stops it.
Why do my LED lights buzz or hum?
The noise almost always comes from inside the bulb or fitting, not the electricity itself. Every LED needs a small driver to convert your 230V mains down to the low voltage the diodes actually run on. When the coils and capacitors inside that driver vibrate at mains frequency, you get a faint hum or buzz.
A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer switch
This is the most common one we see on London callouts. Older leading-edge dimmers were built for filament bulbs, and they work by chopping up the mains waveform. A non-dimmable LED hates that. You'll get buzzing, often some flicker, and sometimes a warm bulb.
The fix is a pair: dimmable LEDs plus a trailing-edge dimmer that's rated for LED loads. Match the dimmer's wattage range to the bulbs and check the minimum load, because a single 5W downlight can be too small a load for some dimmers to hold steady. A cheap or failing driver
Bargain-bin bulbs cut corners on the driver. Some hum straight out of the box. Others go quiet for a few months, then start up as the driver ages and the components loosen. Quick test: if one bulb hums and the rest of the run is silent, that bulb is the culprit. Swap it for a decent branded one and the noise usually goes.
When the buzz is actually a warning
Here's the line that matters. If the buzz is coming from the fitting, it's almost always a driver and it's a nuisance, not a danger. If the buzz is coming from the switch, the wall, or your consumer unit, stop.
That kind of noise can be arcing at a loose connection, and loose connections get hot. Electrical Safety First is clear that you shouldn't ignore buzzing or crackling 'arcing' sounds, and that anything feeling hot to the touch should be checked by a registered electrician. That's a job for proper electrical fault finding and repair, not a bulb swap.
Why do my LED lights glow when switched off?
An LED needs almost no power to light up faintly. So if even a tiny current sneaks through after you've flicked the switch, the bulb glows. That current usually comes from the switch or the wiring, not from a fault. This is often called LED ghosting.
Illuminated or neon-indicator switches
You know those switches with a little glowing dot so you can find them in the dark? That indicator draws a small standby current, and it draws it straight through your light circuit. With an old filament bulb it was nothing. A modern LED is sensitive enough to glow on it. Swapping the switch for a plain one, or fitting a bypass, sorts it. Two-way switching and long cable runs
This one is very British, thanks to how our stair and hallway lights are wired. Where a single light is controlled from two switches, top and bottom of the stairs say, the wires run alongside each other for several metres. The live conductor induces a small voltage in the switched-off one, a bit like two garden hoses lying side by side. It's tiny, but it's enough to make an LED glow.
It looks alarming and it's usually completely harmless. A bypass device across the fitting drains that induced voltage so the bulb stays dark.
Leftover charge in the driver
If your LED glows for a few seconds up to a minute after you switch off, then fades to black, that's just the capacitor in the driver discharging. Normal. Nothing to do. It's the same reason a telly used to take a moment to die when you pulled the plug.
When the glow points to a fault
A bright, steady glow across several fittings, especially paired with flicker, is worth a closer look. It can mean current is leaking where it shouldn't, sometimes from a borrowed neutral, where two circuits have been wired to share a single neutral. That's against the BS 7671 wiring regulations and it needs putting right, not living with. If your lights are also flickering across the house, treat the two symptoms as one job.
Safe to ignore, or call an electrician?
This is the bit most articles skip. Not every buzz or glow needs a sparky, but some absolutely do. Here's the honest split.
Usually fine, or a cheap swap:
- A faint glow that fades within a minute of switching off.
- A single bulb humming quietly while the rest stay silent.
- A glow that only happens because you've got an illuminated switch.
- A non-dimmable bulb buzzing on a dimmer (swap to dimmable plus a trailing-edge dimmer).
Get it checked by an electrician:
- Buzzing coming from the switch, the wall, or the consumer unit rather than the fitting.
- Any burning, fishy or hot-plastic smell, however faint. If you get that, read our note on a burning smell from a socket or switch.
- A switch, fitting or bulb that's warm to the touch, or shows brown or scorch marks.
- A bright glow across several lights, especially with flicker or a breaker that's been tripping.
How to stop LED lights buzzing or glowing
Work through these in order. Most people fix it at step two or three without needing anyone in.
- Narrow it down. Is it one light or the whole circuit? One light points to the bulb. The whole run points to the switch or the wiring.
- Swap a suspect bulb. Replace a cheap humming bulb with a decent branded LED. Cheapest test there is.
- Sort the dimmer. If you're dimming, fit dimmable LEDs and a trailing-edge dimmer matched to the total wattage on that circuit.
- Check the switch. Got a neon indicator or a smart switch? That's very likely your glow. Replace the switch or have a bypass fitted.
- Call it in. If the glow is bright across several fittings, or you've spotted any of the warning signs above, stop tinkering and get an electrician to trace it.
When it's really an electrician's job
A glowing bulb is rarely dangerous. A warm connection behind a switch plate is a different story, and you can't see it from the sofa. That's why we chase the root cause rather than the symptom. Half the time the buzzing or glow is nothing, and we'll tell you so and not charge you for a wiring job you don't need. The other half, there's a loose terminal or a dodgy shared neutral quietly getting warm, and finding it early is a lot cheaper than dealing with what it turns into.
Downlights deserve a special mention. Frequently asked questions
Are LED lights that glow when switched off dangerous?
Almost always no. A faint glow is a tiny leakage current, usually from an illuminated switch, long two-way wiring, or the driver discharging. It won't hurt you or start a fire. The exception is a bright glow across several fittings with flicker, which can point to a wiring fault worth investigating.
Will a glowing LED add much to my electricity bill?
No. The current that makes an LED ghost is a fraction of a watt, far too small to notice on a bill. It's an annoyance in a dark bedroom, not a cost problem.
Why do my LED lights only hum when dimmed?
Because the dimmer is chopping the mains waveform, and that makes the driver's internal parts vibrate harder. It usually means the bulbs, the dimmer, or both aren't a matched LED-friendly pair. Fit dimmable LEDs with a trailing-edge dimmer rated for the load and the hum normally clears.
Do I need a special dimmer for LED lights?
Yes, in most cases. A trailing-edge dimmer designed for LEDs will dim smoothly and quietly, where an old leading-edge dimmer built for filament bulbs tends to buzz and flicker. Check the dimmer's minimum load too, because a couple of low-wattage downlights can be too little for it to hold steady.
Why does one LED glow when off but the others don't?
Usually because that fitting sits closest to an illuminated switch, or on the leg of two-way wiring picking up induced voltage. The other bulbs on the run may be a slightly different make and less sensitive. It's a quirk of the circuit, not a sign that one bulb is faulty.
Is a borrowed neutral something I can fix myself?
No. Tracing and correcting a borrowed or shared neutral means working inside the wiring, and getting it wrong is dangerous. It should be put right by a registered electrician and left compliant with BS 7671. It's exactly the sort of thing our fault finding is for.
