Islington's best-known streets are late Georgian and early Victorian. Barnsbury has Lonsdale, Gibson and Thornhill Squares, Canonbury has Canonbury Square and streets of mid-Victorian villas, and the council describes the terraces facing Highbury Fields as some of the finest Georgian terraces in the borough. Many of these tall houses have been split into flats, and nearly a third of homes in Islington are privately rented.

Conversions bring their own quirks. A top-floor flat may have its meter in the basement with a long cable up through the common parts, and older conversions sometimes have lights or sockets fed from a neighbour's board. In listed houses, a rewire has to work around shutters, cornices and original floorboards, so cable routes are worth agreeing before any chasing starts. Highbury has newer homes too, including the flats of Highbury Square, built within Arsenal's old stadium on Avenell Road, where the jobs are more about lighting and sockets than rewiring.

The council sets its own standards for shared houses: at least six socket outlets in a living room or double bedroom, four in a single bedroom and six above a shared kitchen worktop, plus interlinked mains-wired smoke alarms and a heat detector in every kitchen.
