Electrical work in Greenwich
Covering SE10 and the streets around them.
Greenwich splits neatly into old and new. West Greenwich has Georgian houses on Crooms Hill, Hyde Vale, Gloucester Circus and Royal Hill, gathered around the Regency rebuild of Greenwich Market, while East Greenwich has late Georgian terraces at the foot of Maze Hill and around Ballast Quay, beside Trinity Hospital, the area's oldest building. Both are conservation areas with Article 4 directions, and together with Blackheath they form the buffer zone for the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
That means anything visible on the outside of a house deserves a check with the council first, from new outside lights to cable runs across a front wall. Inside a listed house, chasing walls or lifting old floorboards can need listed building consent too. East Greenwich also has a piece of electrical history on the riverfront: Greenwich Power Station, built between 1902 and 1910 to run the London County Council's trams and now the Underground's emergency power supply.
Greenwich Peninsula is a different job altogether. Knight Dragon, the developer, says it plans more than 17,000 new homes there, and many flats take their heat from a district heating network rather than a gas boiler. Electrical work in modern flats like these is mostly extra sockets, lighting changes, data points and fault finding, often with the managing agent's approval needed for anything near communal areas. Greenwich Millennium Village, designed by Ralph Erskine's practice and built from the 2000s, is a little older but has much the same needs.
Landlords in Greenwich
Royal Greenwich runs borough-wide additional licensing for smaller HMOs until the end of 2028, and lists an EICR among the documents needed to apply. Selective licensing currently covers Woolwich, Plumstead and Shooters Hill only, although a proposal to extend it to more wards, including East Greenwich, went out to consultation in 2026.
