Much of Chiswick's housing is Victorian and Edwardian, and a lot of it is protected. Bedford Park, begun in 1875 with Norman Shaw as architect from 1877, is described by Hounslow Council as probably the best-known and best-preserved later Victorian suburb in outer London. Grove Park, laid out from 1867, was Chiswick's first large Victorian housing estate, and the Glebe Estate grew up after Turnham Green station opened in 1869. By the river, Strand on the Green mixes fishermen's cottages with 18th century houses.

Bedford Park has had an Article 4 direction since 2001, removing some of the permitted development rights homeowners normally have, and more than 350 of its buildings are listed.
