Electrician in Brixton

Brixton has a better claim than most places to an electrical past. In the 1880s Electric Avenue offered shoppers electric light along its whole length, which is where the name comes from, and Lambeth's conservation area statement still singles it out. Behind it, Reliance Arcade, Market Row and Brixton Village, the former Granville Arcade from the 1930s, form a network of covered arcades the council describes as unique in Britain, now full of small food businesses and shops.

The housing covers most eras. There are early 19th century villas on Brixton Water Lane, mid to late Victorian paired houses in Loughborough Park, mansion blocks over the shops on Coldharbour Lane and Rushcroft Road, and post-war estates such as the Loughborough Estate, built by the London County Council in the 1950s. Lambeth's own evidence notes a high proportion of homes built before 1900 and links older stock with fire and electrical hazards.

For market traders, cafes and bars, that means PAT testing, periodic inspection and lighting in tight units. Older shop units along Brixton Road and Atlantic Road have often been altered by tenant after tenant, which is exactly what a periodic inspection is for. In homes, converted Victorian flats are where rewires and consumer unit upgrades usually come up, and landlord work matters more than usual here because of licensing. New homes are coming too, with work started in 2026 on the Somerleyton Road scheme, which has planning permission for 378 homes.
